Hiking in Porto: unmissable routes
Do you love travel and hiking? You'll love exploring Portugal's "unconquered city," which offers beautiful walks that blend urban life with nature. Pack a backpack, closed-toe shoes, and a picnic if you plan on walking all day, and get ready to follow the Porto City Guide on the trails !
A walking tour of Porto
With its many neighborhoods, historic center, wine cellars, and numerous tourist attractions, Porto is a charming destination that deserves to be explored at leisure. A roughly 14km walking route allows you to discover the wonders of Porto in about 4 hours, starting from Liberty Square. From the Lello Bookstore and São Bento Railway Station to the Stock Exchange Palace, Bolhão Market, and the Church of Mercy, this Porto walking tour is ideal if you only have one day.
The Porto City Park Trail
This hike will delight nature lovers and those who appreciate wide open spaces, right in the heart of the city's largest urban park. Spanning 200 hectares, it invites you to wander through shady forests, magnificent meadows, and along lake shores before reaching Matosinhos Beach. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the 5 km walk, and don't forget your camera to capture beautiful birdwatching photos. Picnic areas are available for enjoying lunch outdoors along the way.
The park is slightly out of the way, 15 minutes from the city, accessible by bus which leaves from Praça Dona Filipa de Lencastre and arrives in Vilarinha.
The Douro Valley Wine Trail
Combine the pleasure of walking with the delights of wine tasting on a hike through the heart of the Douro Valley. This loop, surrounded by vineyards, immerses you in a verdant setting for 3 to 4 hours of walking over approximately 8 km. Take the time to admire the magnificent terraced vineyard landscapes, enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the river, or meet the winemakers who welcome you to their family cellars for a delicious tasting. Visit the village of Samodaes for an unforgettable getaway to Porto.
You can reach the village by car or by train, which is the most recommended means of transport.
The Arcozelo Footbridge
South of Porto , less than 5 km from the capital, lies the charming village of Arcozelo. From there, you can follow an easy, year-round route that leads to Senhor da Pedra beach along a small river—a pleasant 4 km round trip between the beach and the countryside. Whether on foot or by bike, this hike is ideal for a family outing south of Porto.
Arcolezo is accessible in 15 minutes by train from Vila Nova de Gaia.
The Oriental Park of Porto
More of a stroll than a true hike, the park offers a pleasant 2km loop that can be completed in 30 minutes. Accessible to all for a refreshing day in the heart of nature, this urban oasis is ideal for relaxing and enjoying a peaceful moment among the many varieties of trees and plants. Walkways allow you to admire the magnificent natural areas, while rest areas are perfect for an open-air picnic just a few kilometers from Porto.
Our favorite hike near Porto : The Paiva Footbridges, starting from Arouca, an hour from Porto. This surprising escape into the heart of unspoiled nature offers magnificent scenery between the river and wooden walkways. The route takes you across a long suspension bridge, one of the largest in the world. This paid hike can be booked online.
Lace up your shoes, hiking in Porto awaits you all year round !
