Visiting Porto in 4 days: the (almost) no-aches itinerary!

Visiting Porto in 4 d ...

Spring break is approaching and the May bank holidays are finally here. It's the perfect time to treat yourself to a Portuguese getaway, a destination that combines the laid-back lifestyle of the Douro Valley with the creative energy of the Atlantic coast.

In April and May, the granite city awakens under a golden light, the terraces of the Ribeira come alive, and the gardens are adorned with fragrant wisteria, far from the sweltering heat and dense crowds of August. Whether you're a backpacker on the lookout for hidden gems or a luxury traveler seeking refinement, Porto has the rare ability to satisfy every budget. Pack your sneakers and your curiosity, because these four days in Porto will leave a lasting impression (and more!).

Day 1: Immersing yourself in the granite soul and the azulejos

To begin your Porto city break in style, head to the historic heart of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your first visual feast awaits at São Bento Station, a veritable open-air museum where 20,000 blue ceramic tiles tell the epic story of Portugal. Budget-conscious travelers can enjoy their first coffee standing at the counter of a local café for just a few cents, while those with a taste for the finer things can indulge in a magical interlude at the Majestic Café, an Art Nouveau masterpiece on Rua Santa Catarina.

Did you know? São Bento station was built on the site of a former convent. Legend has it that you can still hear the ghost of the last nun wandering the corridors !

Next, climb up to the Sé Cathedral to admire a regal panorama of the maze of orange rooftops. The afternoon continues near Praça de Lisboa, at the famous Lello Bookstore, whose carved wooden staircase looks like it's straight out of a magic spellbook. Remember to book your ticket/voucher online well in advance to avoid wasting precious time.

If the queue at Librairie Lello is too long, head to the " Livraria Poetria " next door, a gem for poetry lovers that is much less crowded.

Just a short walk away, in Porto's city center, look up: the Torre dos Clérigos, standing 75 meters tall, challenges you. It's the city's landmark, visible from almost everywhere.

The 360° view is our favorite. If your legs allow, climb the 225 steps of the tower. The effort is rewarded with one of the most beautiful panoramas in Porto : a sea of red rooftops cascading down to the Douro River. It's the perfect spot to get your bearings in all the neighborhoods you'll be exploring.

To close out this first day, head back down to the Ribeira quays to see the lights come on over the Douro, a magical end to the day in prospect.

Day 2: Liquid gold and the bridge of vertigo

Dom Luís I Bridge

The second day of your Porto itinerary belongs to the river and its centuries-old traditions. Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge via its upper deck for a breathtaking aerial experience that offers the most beautiful views of both banks. Once in Vila Nova de Gaia, south of Porto, you enter the heartland of Port wine. Those with a comfortable budget can book a private tasting at the historic cellars of Taylor's House or Graham's Port Lodge. More adventurous travelers might prefer to settle down on the lawns of Jardim do Morro with a Super Bock beer and enjoy the street musicians.

To reach Jardim do Morro from the Gaia docks without breaking a sweat, hop on a Gaia cable car. The ride is spectacular : you'll soar above the rooftops of the port wine cellars with the Dom Luís I Bridge in your sights. It's one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the city! And the whole thing takes just 5 minutes!

After sampling some petiscos, those delicious local tapas, explore the WOW (World of Wine) cultural district. In the evening, escape the hustle and bustle of the touristy waterfront and lose yourself in the narrow streets of Miragaia. This more secluded neighborhood is full of authentic tavernas where you can dine by candlelight to the distant sounds of melancholic fado music.

Day 3: From Art Deco to the Atlantic Sea Spray

In the Gardens of the Crystal Palace
In the Gardens of the Crystal Palace

For this third day of your Portuguese getaway, it's time to leave the stone buildings behind and breathe in the fresh sea air west of Porto. Before heading to the coast, make a stop at the Crystal Palace Gardens. It's here that Porto reveals its most beautiful side under the bright midday light.

Oh... A friend!

The Porto City Guide's top pick: the Douro viewpoint.

Don't just stay near the main dome. Venture into the side walkways that lead to balconies suspended above the river. Under a bright sun, the contrast between the lush green of the gardens and the deep blue of the Douro is simply magical for your photos.

To reach the next stage, don't attempt the journey on foot, as the route is long and rather monotonous. Take the bus, which will drop you off in about ten minutes in front of the Foundation's gates. Find out more about local transport.

Welcome to the Serralves Foundation, a unique place where contemporary art meets lush nature. Its vast park invites you to a serene stroll among the formal gardens and sculptural installations. The more adventurous can take the Treetop Walk, a suspended walkway at canopy level.

Did you know? The pink color of the Serralves villa is original! It is one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the country.

The adventure continues towards Foz do Douro, where the river finally meets the Atlantic Ocean. You can reach this chic district by renting an electric scooter or hopping on the iconic tram line 1. Travelers seeking a touch of luxury can reserve a table overlooking the waves to savor a grilled sea bass. Those on a tighter budget can opt for a Pastel de Nata sprinkled with cinnamon, enjoyed on one of Porto's beaches, with a view of the Felgueiras lighthouse.

Day 4: Local flavors and shopping for everyone

To conclude your long weekend in Porto, head to the Bolhão Market. Recently restored, this covered market is the beating heart of Portuguese gastronomy. It's here that you can find the best tinned sardines in vintage packaging, creamy sheep's cheeses, and fragrant olive oils.

In the afternoon, let your curiosity guide you through the Miguel Bombarda district. It's a haven for designers and boutiques who work with cork with surprising modernity. If you want to be surprised, we suggest you visit the Bombarda shopping center.

Before you pack your bags, there's one last must-try: the Francesinha. This iconic sandwich, a mountain of meat smothered in melted cheese, is the ultimate culinary experience of northern Brazil. It's the comforting dish that will give you the energy you need to start planning your next trip as soon as you get back on your flight home.

The final word: Porto, a love story on every street corner

Four days in Porto is the perfect amount of time to fall in love with the city, but it also guarantees that you'll leave with only one thought in mind: to return. Whether you spent your stay backpacking through the hills or toasting in the finest cellars of Gaia, Porto leaves an indelible mark, made of joyful melancholy (the famous saudade ) and authentic flavors.

The May bank holidays are the perfect opportunity for this first meeting, but the region has so much more to offer!
